The Year 2024 in Wearable Technology: Smart Rings Take Center Stage

The Rise of Smart Rings: A New Era for Wearables

When people think of wearables, they often immediately picture smartwatches. However, 2024 was a relatively quiet year for smartwatches, with iterative updates taking center stage. This phenomenon is common in maturing categories, where polished products replace the innovative and sometimes absurd ideas that defined their early days. Fortunately, it appears that the excitement and creativity are starting to resurface with the emergence of smart rings.

The Resurgence of Smart Rings

Smart rings are not a new concept, but 2024 saw a surge in interest and innovation within this category. I first sensed this trend back in January when several smart rings made an appearance at CES. The momentum continued to build in February with Samsung’s announcement of the Galaxy Ring, a long-rumored device that marked the company’s entry into the smart ring market.

Samsung is a major player in the smartwatch space, and its foray into smart rings is significant. This move propels what was once a niche form factor into the mainstream. The Galaxy Ring is an exciting addition to the market, offering features like optimized battery life and sensor accuracy when paired with Samsung’s Galaxy Watches.

Innovative Features and Designs

The newer crop of smart rings is noteworthy for its unique features and designs. In addition to the Galaxy Ring, I had the opportunity to test several other models, including the Circular Slim and Movano’s Evie Ring. These devices offer a range of innovative features, such as silent haptic alarms, AI chatbots, and FDA clearance for health metrics.

The industry is starting to see new ideas emerge, which is particularly refreshing given Oura’s dominance in the space for over a decade. Oura primarily focuses on sleep tracking and recovery, leaving room for other manufacturers to explore different use cases for smart rings. This competition is good news for consumers, as it drives innovation and pushes companies like Oura to launch new features and integrations.

Challenges and Limitations

While the interest in smart rings is growing, there are still several challenges and limitations that manufacturers must address. Smart rings are expensive compared to similarly priced smartwatches, and their functionality is limited by their small size and complexity. Manufacturers must also contend with fit issues, as they need to create multiple sizes to accommodate a wide range of finger sizes.

The Future of Smart Rings

It remains to be seen whether the renaissance in smart rings will continue into 2025. Samsung’s Galaxy Ring has generated significant interest, but its success is not guaranteed. If it does well, particularly as an accessory to other devices, we can expect Google and Apple to take notice.

In my experience wearing six different smart rings over the summer, I encountered a lot of curiosity from friends, family, and colleagues. Some people were looking for a break from smartwatches, while others wanted something discreet or comfortable for tracking their sleep.

The interest is certainly there, but it’s unclear whether this momentum will sustain itself. Will we see continued innovation in smart rings, or will the market return to Oura being the dominant player?

The Renaissance Continues?

As we look ahead to 2025, it’s exciting to consider the possibilities for smart rings. With companies like Samsung and Movano pushing the boundaries of what these devices can do, it’s likely that we’ll see continued innovation in this space.

Whether or not the renaissance continues remains to be seen. However, one thing is certain: smart rings are no longer just a niche form factor. They’re here to stay, and they’re only going to get more exciting.
