NEA Leads $100 Million Funding Round into Fei-Fei Li’s New AI Startup Valued Over $1 Billion

In a significant development for the AI startup ecosystem, World Labs, a stealthy startup founded by renowned Stanford University AI professor Fei-Fei Li, has raised two rounds of financing just two months apart. The latest round was led by NEA and valued the company at over $1 billion, according to multiple reports.

Initial Financing Valuation: A Significant Increase

The initial financing was reported in July, with a valuation of $200 million, as per one person familiar with the investments. This suggests that World Labs’ valuation has more than quintupled in just two months. In contrast, the latest round valued the company at over $1 billion, indicating a significant increase in investor confidence.

Investors Continue to Bet Big on AI Startups

The fact that investors are placing large bets on AI startups founded by prominent AI scientists, even if their businesses are unproven, is a testament to the immense potential of the field. World Labs’ ability to attract top-tier investors like NEA and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) in such a short span speaks volumes about its innovative approach.

What World Labs Is Working On: AI Models for 3D Physicality

World Labs is working on creating AI models that can accurately estimate the three-dimensional physicality of real-world objects and environments. This technology has far-reaching implications, enabling detailed digital replicas without the need for extensive data collection. According to one investor familiar with World Labs’ approach:

"Very little three-dimensional data exists in the world. Autonomous vehicle companies collect that data by driving thousands and thousands of miles to create three-dimensional data, which they then use to train their machines. In all other applications, like serving coffee, there’s no three-dimensional data. Collecting that data is expensive because the universe of places you have to collect data is enormous."

Potential Applications: Gaming, Robotics, and Beyond

Once available, World Labs’ models can be used in gaming and robotics applications, among others. Li, widely known as a ‘Godmother of AI,’ has discussed how machines can be trained to develop human-like ‘spatial intelligence’ in a TED talk earlier this year.

Fei-Fei Li: A Pioneer in Computer Vision

Li is best known for her work on ImageNet, a dataset that revolutionized computer vision. Her current role as co-director of Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute is a testament to her contributions to the field. She is currently on partial leave until December 2025 from this position.

Investors in World Labs

The investors involved in the initial round included Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Canadian firm Radical Ventures, where Li is a scientific partner. The latest round was led by NEA, further solidifying the company’s reputation as a promising AI startup.
